Are Ugly Dog Pictures Insulting to the Dog?

If you put up a display in your store or online that was called “ugly children pictures”, you would probably get some negative feedback from your patrons, but setting aside a section of your shop for “ugly dog pictures” is politically correct. Why is that? If the dog understood the meaning of the phrase, don’t you think he’d be insulted? It’s possible, but for many people ugly dogs also happen to be cute dogs, so they don’t complain when you tag them with a negative moniker. We don’t either. We have our share of ugly dog pictures here at Animal Blueprint Company. We love them all equally.

What makes a dog ugly? Some breeds just look different than others, enough so that we view them as odd. As people, we look at each other the same way. Judgment is a human characteristic. It’s not necessarily a good one, but it is one that we all share to some degree. If you’re a dog owner you look at your own preferred breed as “beautiful” or “special”. Those that differ from it the most are the dogs you classify as “ugly”. To the owner of a Golden retriever, a pug is an ugly dog, but to the pug owner an Irish setter might look funny. It’s really a matter of perspective.

There are, of course, dogs that are considered universally ugly by all dog owners. Chinese Crested and Japanese Chins seem to be regarded by all as very strange looking dogs. Mutts with Crested or Chin mix in them are regularly entered in ugly dog contests around the world. To their owners, they might be considered cute and they’re definitely lovable, but when it comes to canine esthetics they are downright hideous. On a positive note, if you win an ugly dog contest there’s usually a cash prize awarded.

If you enter the keyword “ugly dog pictures” into the search box on your computer, you will see a number of sites that feature pictures of strange looking dogs. Some of these are the way they are because of breed and genetics. Others are deformed due to illness. The latter do not belong in an ugly dog pictures site. That’s exploitation and disrespectful to the dog. Conditions such as dislocated jaws and skin rashes aren’t supposed to be put on display. They need to be treated.

If you’re in the market for an ugly dog picture, we have them here. We can’t tell you which ones they are because that will up to you to decide. To the folks who work here at Animal Blueprint Company, all dogs are wonderful creatures. They are our best friends, our companions, our guardians, and often our therapists. They listen when we rant and rave, walk silently beside us when we’re feeling lonesome, and always give us the unconditional love that human beings just aren’t capable of. There’s absolutely nothing ugly about any of that. It’s about as beautiful as it gets.
